UPDATE: flink.run was discontinued on September 14. You can read the communication here: Why I'm shutting down flink.

Have you ever tried to get access to your running data in a spreadsheet? Even better, on a daily basis and without manual intervention? If yes, you know how tricky it can be! It is now possible to get access to your running data easily with a tool developed by Nicolas Zimmer called flink.run.

What is flink?

Flink is an online tool that connects to your Strava account and allows you to filter your runs, access several views, and extract the data on spreadsheets.

Data Viz of your Running Data

There are several views on flink. The main one represents the evolution of your running performance over time, by distance, moving time or pace.

You can also see the distribution of your activities using the same three metrics.

Of course, you can add filters to see only the data that matter to you: by data, distance, time, pace, location, etc.

Data Extracts

This is where flink comes very powerful! Indeed, you can easily extract all your activity data in CSV or Excel format within seconds. You can also export them to Google Sheet or even better create an auto-updated Google Sheet that refreshes every time to load a new activity!

The auto-updated Google Sheets function comes particularly handy when you want to create your own running reports or dashboards. For instance, I use those data and Tableau Public to create my own Running Dashboard that automatically refreshes everyday. I will write an article on how you can also create your own dashboard.

How to Start?

Get your data ready on Strava

flink is really easy to use as long as you have a Strava account already setup with your activities. If you don’t have a Strava account, I would recommend to open one for free. You don’t have to publicly share your information and running data. If you don’t have your history on Strava, you can get it from Garmin Connect, RunKeeper or other apps using tappiriik. If you use a Garmin watch with Garmin Connect, you can also use this Chrome Extension.

Create an account on flink and connect to Strava

Go on flink.run and click on Connect with Strava to start. Then select the three boxes and click on Authorize.

After that, you are all set to start using flink! The platform is very user friendly and does not require much explanation, but if needed you can read the documentation or ask you questions on the Facebook or Twitter pages.

Enjoy!

Edit: I stubble upon a new Zapier connection to Strava which can be used to download automatically Strava activities in Excel. Worth a try!
